EFCC Is Recovering Stolen Money From Diezani Every Day - Itse Sagay

Professor Itse Sagay, the chairman of the presidential advisory committee against corruption has said that the Economic and financial crimes commission, EFCC, is recovering stolen money from Nigeria's former minister of petroleum, Diezani Allison daily.

Sagay made these statements while reacting to the 19th anniversary of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP). He also reminded the party that Diezani was one of its products.

He said that the Buhari administration has recovered nearly a trillion naira from officials who served under the PDP administration, adding that the party should apologize to Nigerians and turn a new leaf. In his words;

“I am disappointed in the PDP. If they are celebrating 19 years, they should celebrate with caution and give the nation an assurance that they would not bring such negative impact on our nation again and they have turned a new leaf.

Yes, President Obasanjo was the one who proposed the establishment of the EFCC and the ICPC? After Nuhu Ribadu left the EFCC, what became of the EFCC? These people just neutralized these agencies and turned this country into an ATM from which they kept on withdrawing money until there was nothing left.

So, they destroyed our economy; their greed was overwhelming. If you look at Diezani for instance, there is no day that goes by that money is not recovered from her. In Thursday’s papers, it was reported that the EFCC had recovered about half a trillion naira from these
people.”

Traders protest planned merger of market with school

Traders at the Ogba Retail Market on Monday closed their shops for business in order to protest against the planned demolition of the market by the Ojodu Local Council Development Area.

They also claimed that the local council authorities had concluded plans to relocate them to Ojodu Primary School pending the reconstruction of the market.

This, according to them, is unacceptable as a market and a school should not exist in the same premises.

The protesters were armed with placards bearing various inscriptions such as, “Ojodu LCDA Chairman, stop creating poverty in our community; Retirees, widows, graduates, self employed to be displaced by Ojodu LCDA, why? We say no to false report to the Lagos State House of Assembly,” among others

PUNCH Metro had on June 6, reported that the traders had expressed concern over the planned demolition and relocation of traders and that the State House of Assembly Committee on Transport, Commerce and Industry had invited the market association and the council authorities in a bid to resolve the issues amicably.

But the Chairman of the Market Association, Mr. Teju Ayewole, told PUNCH Metro on Monday that the traders embarked on the protest to appeal to the state government to come to their aid.

He said, “This is our own way of saying no to the planned demolition of the market. They had claimed that the reason for their action is for development. What do they mean by development? This market is very neat and organised. We have received awards as the cleanest market in the state.

“The Assembly committee they set up to resolve the issue claimed that we have agreed to the demolition and reconstruction of the market. How can we agree to pay N5m per shop after reconstruction? How many of us can afford it?”

A shop owner in the market, who identified herself simply as Alhaja Olorundare, wondered why the council chairman would want to implement a policy that would increase poverty.

A youth representative, Adewunmi Olalekan, argued that the council could give the market a facelift without necessarily demolishing it. He said relocation was not feasible because of the thousands of traders involved and because the proposed site was not suitable.

He said, “How can a school and a market exist in the same premises?”

An apprentice, who is learning tailoring in the market, identified simply as Esther, appealed to the government to intervene on the matter as many families earn their livelihood from the market.

The Information Officer of the council directed our correspondent to the council chairman, saying he was in a position to respond appropriately.

But attempts to speak with the chairman were unsuccessful as calls made to his phone line was received by his personal assistant who said he was in a meeting and would get back to us.

The chairman, as at the time of filing this report, had yet to make contact.

Sudan didn’t frustrate Nyanya suspect’s extradition –Envoy

The Arab Republic of Sudan has said that the process of extraditing one of the masterminds of the April 14,2014 Nyanya blast, Sadiq Ogwuche, is on course and cannot be frustrated.

Contrary to a report that the Sudanese government had blocked the repatriation of the terror suspect, Sudan stated that no such thing happened, stressing that Ogwuche would be extradited to Nigeria as soon as the necessary formalities were concluded.

It stated that the extradition process was being handled by the International Criminal Police, otherwise known as INTERPOL, noting that the suspect would be brought back to Nigeria to stand trial for his crimes.

The Media Adviser to the Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohammed Abdulrahman, stated these in a telephone interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Monday.

He refuted a report by a national newspapers (not The PUNCH) that Sudan had blocked the extradition of Ogwuche, following the intervention of an unnamed Emir.

The newspaper had alleged that the Emir used his political connection in Sudan to frustrate the Nigerian officials that visited the country to bring back Ogwuche, adding that the officials came back to Nigeria in frustration.

The paper had reported, “It was learnt that when the officials of the Nigerian security agencies arrived Khartoum, Sudan, last week for the hand-over of Ogwuche by the Sudanese authorities, they were faced with conditions that were unknown to them, particularly against the backdrop of the fact that Sudan was not a signatory to any convention on the extradition of criminals and terrorists.

“Ogwuche’s wife, who is based in Sudan, is believed to be the interface between the Nigerian Emir and her husband’s lawyer that are battling to get the suspected terrorist out of the hook in Sudan.”

But Abdulrahman, who described the report as a fabrication, stressed that the blast suspect would be brought back to Nigeria once the extradition processes were completed.

He cited the extradition of former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, from Dubai to the United Kingdom, which he said took some time before it was perfected.

He noted that it involved court processes and other formalities that cannot be done in a hurry.

He said, “The process of extradition requires a lot of paper work and it often takes time. It is handled by the INTERPOL and no government can stop it. So, the report by a newspapers that Sudan stopped the extradition of the terror suspect is not true; it is a fabrication.

“We don’t have sympathies for Boko Haram because Sudan is against terrorism in all its ramfication. We are an international player and we don’t condone terrorist activities in any form. We have the Ahfad University for Women; so we support girls getting quality education and cannot support any violence against women or other people on the grounds of religion or politics.”

The media adviser condemned the abduction of over 200 school girls by the Boko Haram sect, saying the action was a crime against humanity.

FIFA is to review how it broadcasts goal-line technology decisions after the process caused confusion during a World Cup game between France and Honduras, BBC Sport reports.

On Sunday in France’s 3-0 win, goalline technology was used for the first time at the World Cup to aid a decision.

Replays showed a ‘no goal’ graphic before judging the ball later crossed the line after hitting the goalkeeper.

Honduras coach Luis Suarez and his French counterpart Didier Deschamps were left confused by the process.

“The first replay that was used showed the ball hitting the inside of the post and not fully crossing the line, before the next replay aired seconds later with the animation confirming the ball had fully crossed the line after it had hit the goalkeeper,” said a statement from football’s governing body.

Driver drags tricycle rider on road till death

The life of a 28-year-old tricycle rider, Onu Kingsley, has been cut short after the driver of a Toyota Corolla, identified simply as Kingsley, allegedly dragged him on the road and crashed his body against a hurdle.

The incident happened on the Apapa Road, Ebute Meta area of Lagos State on Saturday evening.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Onu, an indigene of Enugu State, had alighted from his tricycle, popularly called, Keke NAPEP, to complain that Kingsley hit his motorcycle and injured one of his passengers.

Our correspondent learnt that the driver ignored the deceased and made to drive off. Seeing this, Onu was said to have pulled him by the shirt in a bid to stop him from escaping.

The suspect was said to have wound up his window glass with the deceased’s hand stuck, and raced down the Apapa Road, dragging him on the road in the process.

A friend of the deceased, Emmanuel Esan, said they lived in the same room on Ilaje Street.

He said, “We were together in the room that evening because we lived together. He did not plan to go out that day, but because there was no electricity, he decided to go out and make some money.

“I suddenly woke up around 12 midnight and didn’t see him by my side. I decided to call his telephone line, but the person who picked it said the owner of the phone had been injured in an accident and was at the police station.”

He said he never knew his friend had died until someone broke the news to him while he was heading for the Iponri Police Station.

Esan lamented that Onu might not have died if he had been helped to the hospital on time.

“I learnt he was on the accident spot for over two hours before the police arrived and took them to the station. He was asked to make statements, together with the driver. It was on the way to the hospital that he died,” he added.

He said Onu had only recently bought an application form to run a part time academic programme at the Yaba College of Technology, when fate struck.

Uncle to the deceased, Mike Onu, said he brought him to Lagos 15 years ago.

He described him as a quiet, humble and hardworking boy, adding that the incident was unfortunate.

“He was working hard for his future when the incident happened. He has just two brothers; one is in Sokoto, while the second is in Enugu.

“Since he died, his body has been lying there at the Mainland General Hospital mortuary.

“We have been waiting to hear from the family of the suspect, but none of them has shown up. We believe the police will help us handle the situation,” he added.

A family friend, Spurgeon Ataene, asked the police authorities to give the deceased justice.

The legal practitioner said, “The circumstances under which a case can be regarded as a fatal motor accident are clearly distinct from that of a case of murder. Murder is with intent to kill ab initio.

“Here, the suspect was not even provoked. He was the one who hit the passengers and was being confronted. He still sped off, brushing Onu’s body on the concrete tars, peeling off his flesh in the process and turning his body to piles of meat. This is a clear case of murder and should be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Ngozi Braide, could not be reached on the telephone.

A text message sent to her phone had also yet to be replied as of the time of filing this report.
